2010 Holidays in Lanzarote

There are seven islands in the Spanish owned Canarian archipelago. And Lanzarote – the fourth largest – is located at the eastern end of the chain. Just off the cost of what used to be the Spanish Sahara in West Africa. This location generates a fantastic semi tropical climate – with Lanzarote sitting on the same line of latitude as parts of Mexico, Florida and the Bahamas.

Lanzarote is often referred to as the Island of Fire thanks to the fact that enormous volcanic eruptions took place here during the 18th and 19th century. Which covered much of the interior of the island in lava. This whole area was declared a national park in the 1970´s and is now the most popular visitor attraction on the island.

All of the main UK tour operators offer Lanzarote holidays in their brochures. With prices starting from around the £250 per week mark. The island is also ideal for independent travellers. As it’s easier than ever to pick up cheap flights to the island thanks to the arrival in the market of both easyJet and Ryanair. The latter taking advantage of the recent waiver of Spanish airport charges to re-focus their business on the Canaries.

Visitors to the island can explore over 90 beaches – which can be enjoyed all year round. As well as some stunning scenery – with the volcanic region closely followed by the creations of César Manrique as the most popular sights on the island. Exploring these attractions is easy too – as this is a small island, measuring just 60km by 40km. Car hire in Lanzarote is also very affordable – with a week’s rental starting at about €100.

There are plenty of places to stay on the island too – and Lanzarote accommodation standards are high. With over 200 hotels and thousands of villas available for rent both in and outside the main resorts of Puerto del Carmen, Playa Blanca and Costa Teguise.

Lanzarote is also home to a host of pictureseque pueblos. Such as Yaiza – the miracle village – which is the spot where the lava flow from the nearby Fire Mountains finally came to a halt. And Haria – which is nestled in the atmospheric environment of the Valley of 1000 Palms.

Whilst the island is an all year round holiday destination Lanzarote is best enjoyed during the autumn. As the weather is still fantastic whilst the summer crowds are long gone.
